Nestled beneath the mystical Mount Rtanj, in the heart of Boljevac, stands a guardian of time - the Museum of the Timok Rebellion. The museum's permanent exhibition transports us back to the era of the Timok Rebellion, reminding us of the people and events of the 1880s: King Milan Obrenović, Milija Petrović, Dobrosav Petrović, Ljuba Didić, Ace Stanojević, Ljuba Božinović, and many others.
The Timok Rebellion started in 1883 in the Boljevac district and then spread throughout the Zaječar area. It was raised by representatives of the People's Radical Party against the government of King Milan Obrenović. It began with the people, urged by the leaders of the radicals such as Nikola Pašić, refusing to surrender their weapons. The government's response was to declare a state of emergency and establish the Special Court.
The Museum of the Timok Rebellion in Boljevac is housed in the reconstructed building of the former old jail where rebels from the entire Crnorečki region were imprisoned during the rebellion. It was opened in 1983, on the centenary of the Timok Rebellion. The jail was built after 1860 when Prince Miloš Obrenović proclaimed Boljevac as the seat of the district.
The museum's exhibition follows the period before the Timok Rebellion, the beginning of the rebellion, the struggle between the people's and standing army, the organization of the army in the 1880s, the state of the population at the end of the 19th century, the most significant personalities related to the rebellion, all the way to the Special Court and the suppression of the rebellion.
In addition to documentation, the museum's collection is mostly comprised of photographs of individuals who played a crucial role in the Timok Rebellion.
An artistic collection featuring watercolors and drawings related to the Timok Rebellion is also showcased in the museum. Part of the local collection is also on display, featuring items such as spindles, old woolen socks, and certain elements of dining utensils.
