Many adventurers, mountaineers, and physically fit individuals traditionally celebrate Christmas holidays with an ascent to the mystical pyramid of eastern Serbia: Rtanj. Due to its extraordinary energy and beauty, Rtanj attracts more visitors each year, making this event increasingly popular.
At the top of Rtanj – Šiljak (1,565 meters), stands the ruins of the former Church of St. George. Besides being located at the highest peak of Rtanj, this church is interesting because it was built in 1935 with the help of 1000 workers by Greta Minh, the wife of the owner of the Rtanj mine, Julius Minh, in memory of her late husband. Today, only ruins remain at this site as gold seekers have destroyed it several times.
The ascent to the top can be approached from different directions, with trails of varying difficulty levels. Depending on the trail difficulty and weather conditions, the length of the ascent varies. Adequate equipment is necessary for the climb, and if you lack experience in mountaineering or are unfamiliar with the trails, a guide is essential.
